The Last of Us Director Bruce Straley: “AAA Games Have Become Boring”

Bruce Straley is one of the most influential figures behind The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 at Naughty Dog – today he's developing his own indie game, „Coven of the Chicken Foot“. In an interview with Edge Magazine, he spoke candidly: Modern AAA productions have often become „boring“ in terms of gameplay mechanics and experience. As an example, he cited gameplay footage of God of War: Laufey, stating that he felt little excitement upon seeing it.

What Exactly Did Bruce Straley Say About God of War: Laufey?

Important context: According to GamesRadar+, Straley explicitly stated that he was not criticizing the Santa Monica Studio team itself. He even emphasized that he was impressed by the graphical presentation – „every pixel stunning,“ he quoted. Instead, his criticism targeted a larger industry pattern: that many AAA titles, despite their technical brilliance, too often play it safe in terms of gameplay. This is less an apology to Santa Monica Studio and more a clarification that his statement is directed at a trend, not a specific team.

Why Is This Statement Causing Such a Stir?

Straley's comment joins a growing industry debate where experienced developers are increasingly questioning publicly whether large budgets and elaborate graphics automatically lead to better gaming experiences. Precisely because Straley himself helped shape two of the most influential AAA titles of the last decade with The Last of Us and Uncharted 4, his criticism carries more weight than that of an outsider. Similar debates about pressure, expectations, and working methods in AAA production have also arisen recently beyond creative questions, for example, regarding our report on the Wardogs CEO controversy about crunch in the industry.

For players, Straley's statement doesn't immediately change anything for God of War: Laufey itself – the game remains in development at Santa Monica Studio as planned. What will be particularly interesting is whether Straley's own indie project can demonstrate how his criticism can practically translate into a finished game.
