The Last of Us Part 2: Multiplayer Mod Canceled Following Sony Request

An ambitious fan project for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC will not materialize: A team of modders had spent months working on an unofficial PvP multiplayer mod that was slated for release. Now, the developers themselves have spoken out – the project is being discontinued because Sony Interactive Entertainment directly contacted them and requested that it not be released.

Why Did Sony Stop The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Mod?

Sony has not publicly provided a detailed legal justification. The mod creators themselves state in their announcement that they were contacted and asked not to release the project – and decided to comply with this request rather than risk a legal dispute with the publisher. Sony holds the rights to practically all assets, the netcode concept, and the brand itself, which places an unofficial PvP mode on thin legal ice, even if offered for free and without commercial intent.

What Content Would the Mod Have Offered?

The mod was intended to add a competitive PvP mode to the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2 – precisely the kind of multiplayer experience that Naughty Dog and Sony themselves had once planned as a standalone game, but ultimately canceled at the end of 2023 (that project was known as “The Last of Us Online”). With this fan project, the modding community aimed to fill that very gap, albeit without live-service ambitions and free for all owners of the main game.

How Does This Case Fit Into Sony's Previous Stance on Mods?

Sony generally takes a stricter approach to fan content than many other major publishers: For first-party brands like The Last of Us, God of War, or Horizon, the corporation regularly intervenes as soon as mods go beyond mere cosmetic adjustments and introduce their own game modes or network functions. This notably differs from the modding culture at many PC-focused studios, where custom multiplayer mods are often tolerated or even encouraged. For players, this specifically means: those who had hoped for an unofficial PvP mode will have to continue waiting or hope for an official Sony project, which is currently not announced.

From our perspective, the modders' decision is understandable – independent fan teams almost always come up short legally against a publisher like Sony anyway, and an early concession saves trouble for all parties.
