Switch 2 Smashes Sales Figures: Nintendo Sees Zelda Remake as Just the Beginning

Barely a year after its market launch, Nintendo is taking stock of the Nintendo Switch 2: According to the COO of Nintendo of America, the console has already sold around 20 million units. In the same breath, he referred to the recently unveiled remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and made it clear: this is just the beginning.

How Well Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Selling So Far?

With approximately 20 million units sold in just under a year, the Switch 2 is moving at a pace that is remarkable even within Nintendo's own console history. For comparison: the first Switch took considerably longer after its 2017 launch to reach comparable sales figures, despite ultimately becoming one of the best-selling consoles of all time. The faster start of the Switch 2 can be attributed, among other things, to its already established brand and a strong software lineup from the outset.

What's Behind the Statement About the Zelda Remake?

The COO's statement refers to the recently announced remake of Ocarina of Time, considered one of the series' most influential games, which is now being visually and technically overhauled for the Switch 2. By explicitly calling this project a starting point and not an exception, Nintendo suggests that more elaborate remakes of classic titles could be expected in the coming years – a signal that is likely to spark speculation among fans of older Zelda and Mario titles.

For players, this primarily means: anyone who has hesitated to get a Switch 2 now has another compelling reason with the Ocarina of Time remake. Nintendo has not yet communicated a detailed release date for the remake, but further information is expected in the coming months.
