Squadron 42 Returns with New Trailer, Steam Wishlist, and Cast

Squadron 42 returns: Developer Cloud Imperium Games has given the single-player spin-off of Star Citizen a new cinematic trailer, opened its Steam Wishlist, and introduced the full cast.

According to IGN, Squadron 42 is the story-driven campaign set within the Star Citizen universe. Development has been ongoing since 2014, with Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts at the helm. Consequently, the game positions itself as a spiritual successor to the Wing Commander series.

What Does the New Squadron 42 Trailer Reveal?

According to IGN, the trailer showcases a significant amount of gameplay: first-person shooter segments with platforming and puzzles, ship customization, off-duty activities, a hacking mini-game, and a glimpse at story choices. The blend of space combat, first-person action, and narrative is brought to life through performance capture – CIG states that the actors' performances are directly integrated into the gameplay and not just confined to cutscenes.

Who Stars in Squadron 42?

The cast boasts a Hollywood ensemble: Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Henry Cavill are all featured. The main character is played by Ian Duncan, while the female playable character is portrayed by Alix Wilton Regan, known for Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Assassin’s Creed Origins.

When Does Squadron 42 Release?

In August, CIG postponed the game to the second quarter of 2027. Roberts justified this by stating that Squadron 42 would be lost in the hype storm surrounding GTA 6 in November. Our report on GTA 6 radio stations also shows just how dominantly Rockstar's game is currently shaping the industry.

Is Adding Squadron 42 to Your Wishlist Worth It?

From our perspective, the new trailer is primarily a much-needed sign of life after a bumpy summer: Following the postponement and a challenging developer livestream, CIG apparently aims to regain trust. The Steam Wishlist costs nothing and is a non-committal way to keep an eye on the release. There is no firm date yet, only the Q2 2027 timeframe.
