It's official: Sega Producer Takashi Iizuka confirmed in an interview at Tokyo Game Show 2026 that a new Sonic game is already in development. While concrete details about the title, platforms, or a release window are not yet available, Iizuka is already making it clear what direction the journey will take.
What Exactly Did Iizuka Say?
Speaking to Nintendo Life, Iizuka stated verbatim: “We’ll be creating a whole new kind of gameplay experience through various approaches—from characters and story to game systems.” This translates to: Sonic Team aims to create a completely new gameplay experience across multiple layers – characters, story, and game systems. He did not reveal exactly what this would look like, emphasizing that he didn't want to provide a “spoiler.”
What Does Iizuka Mean by a “Completely New Gameplay Experience”?
To make his statement more tangible, Iizuka drew a comparison to the franchise's own history: Sonic Team had already shown with the “Color Powers” from Sonic Colors how strongly individual game mechanics can affect the overall gameplay feel. It is precisely at this point, his statement suggests, that the team now wants to start and go a step further – towards things that “have not yet been seen in Sonic.”
This can be well understood when looking at recent Sonic history: Sonic Frontiers from 2022 was the biggest stylistic shift in the series to date, moving away from linear levels towards open zones with exploration elements. Iizuka now hints that this “Open Zone” concept was not the end of the line, but rather an intermediate step towards something entirely new.
What Does the Announcement Mean for Sonic Fans?
After years of spin-offs, mobile titles like Sonic Rumble, and the film series, this is the first concrete confirmation of a new mainline game in a long time. For the community, it should be particularly interesting that Iizuka explicitly talks about an overhaul of the game systems, and not just new graphics or additional levels. Those who were hoping for a genuine Sonic Frontiers 2 might therefore have to prepare for something completely different. Sega traditionally collects official information on Sonic titles, including future announcements, via the SEGA Media Portal for the press.
Sega has not yet released any information regarding platforms, a possible release window, or even a working title. Given the early development phase, where according to Iizuka not even all core ideas are finalized, it will likely be some time until an official unveiling.
