Rockstar Officially Responds to GTA 6 Leaks: “Heartbreaking for Our Team”

For over a week, leaked gameplay videos of GTA 6 have been circulating online, with new clips constantly being released under the name "Cyberleek." Now, Rockstar Games has issued a detailed official statement on the matter for the first time – using unusually emotional language.

What Exactly Does Rockstar's Statement on the GTA 6 Leaks Say?

In the statement released on August 26, Rockstar writes that it's "an understatement" to say that the leaked gameplay videos were "heartbreaking for our team." The studio emphasizes that this is "obviously not" how they wanted the community to see the game for the first time after all this time. At the same time, Rockstar apologizes for the long wait – both for the completion of the game and for sharing official details. The studio also confirms that Grand Theft Auto VI is now "nearly" finished and announces a detailed official look at the game. Important for everyone who has avoided the leaks so far: Rockstar explicitly warns that the "intended player experience could be compromised by spoilers." Finally, the studio thanks the community and once again refers to the release date of November 19.

Why Is This Wave of Leaks Such a Sensitive Issue for Rockstar?

In the past, Rockstar has been extremely restrictive with early insights into its own games – even during the major hack involving early GTA 6 builds in 2022, the studio reacted with noticeable displeasure. A former Rockstar employee recently even compared the current wave of leaks to the infamous "Hot Coffee" scandal from GTA: San Andreas, which brought the studio months of controversy and a re-rating of its age classification (more on this in our report on the comparison with the Hot Coffee scandal). Unlike in 2022, this time it's not a classic hack but apparently recordings that are gradually reaching the public over weeks – for a studio that meticulously plans its marketing campaigns, this is a loss of control that is difficult to conceal publicly.

For players, this primarily means one thing: If you truly want to be surprised until the release on November 19, you should now steer clear of leak clips and relevant forums.
