A former Rockstar developer is now putting the endless wave of GTA 6 leaks into historical context – and delivers a harsh verdict. Obbe Vermeij, who served as Technical Director at Rockstar North for 14 years, calls the current leaks a “non-issue” compared to the 2005 Hot Coffee scandal.
Vermeij worked on titles such as GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and Ballad of Gay Tony at Rockstar Games, and knows the studio from the inside. His comparison carries weight: The Hot Coffee scandal, involving a hidden sex mini-game code in GTA San Andreas, cost Rockstar an estimated 50 million dollars at the time and ended in a settlement of over 20 million dollars. The current GTA 6 leaks – images, videos, alleged build excerpts – are miles away from that, according to Vermeij.
What was the Hot Coffee Scandal in GTA San Andreas?
In 2005, modders discovered deactivated sex mini-game content called “Hot Coffee” within San Andreas's code. The discovery sparked a nationwide debate in the USA, a subsequent reclassification of the game to “Adults Only,” and class-action lawsuits against Take-Two. To this day, it remains one of the most expensive PR and legal scandals in the gaming industry.
Why are the GTA 6 leaks harmless from the former developer's perspective?
Vermeij's point: While the current leaks show game content before the official release, they do not violate any youth protection rules and do not trigger legal consequences on the scale of Hot Coffee. For the developers in Edinburgh and Leeds, the leaks practically change nothing in their daily work – unlike in 2005, when Rockstar had to address the incident internally and externally for months.
For us, this is a welcome perspective in a debate that has recently been quite heated: The GTA 6 leak series has been causing excitement for weeks, most recently, for example, through a leak about the Vice City radio station. The fact that a Rockstar veteran, of all people, is now calling for calm is likely to defuse some of the drama in the discussion for many fans – even if Take-Two itself continues to take strong legal action against leakers.
