Rockstar vs. IWGB: Tribunal Extends into November

The employment tribunal between Rockstar Games and the IWGB union is taking longer than initially expected. The proceedings were originally scheduled to conclude on Friday, October 16, but now they are extending into November.

The reason: witness examinations are taking longer than anticipated. Furthermore, Rockstar's lawyers requested more time for the cross-examination of several dismissed employees, and this request was granted.

Why Is the Rockstar Tribunal Delayed?

According to Eurogamer, two additional hearing days have been scheduled: November 17 and 18, 2026. Closing arguments are then expected to follow, after which the verdict will be delivered.

This week, the IWGB continues to question Rockstar's witnesses. According to Eurogamer, the proceedings are proving to be lengthy and revealing. The November dates fall just one day before the release of GTA 6 on November 19, 2026.

What Is the Dispute Between Rockstar and the IWGB About?

In late 2025, Rockstar dismissed over 30 employees for alleged gross misconduct. All of them were members of a union Discord channel. The IWGB claims this constitutes union-busting, meaning the deliberate suppression of union activities. Rockstar, on the other hand, maintains the dismissals were due to the unauthorized disclosure of information.

Both sides believe they are in the right. It is up to the court to determine what is true. Nothing has been proven until the verdict is reached.

Recently, a statement made during a witness examination garnered attention. According to Eurogamer, one of Rockstar Lincoln's bosses stated last Friday that he was not interested in evidence of union efforts. Instead, he focused on other matters, such as the creation of a union Twitter account.

What Does the Verdict Mean for the Gaming Industry?

The case is considered groundbreaking for the British gaming industry. The outcome could therefore have repercussions far beyond Rockstar. A verdict in favor of either side would set precedents for how studios may handle union activities and how employees can organize.

From our perspective, the timing is delicate for Rockstar. While the marketing for GTA 6 is in full swing (more on this in GTA 6: Rockstar's Miami Marketing Grows), the tribunal is drawing public attention just as the release approaches. Whether the interest in the game will overshadow the debate or if the debate will gain more traction precisely because of the game's release, remains to be seen. What's clear is that anyone interested in the release will hardly be able to avoid this topic.

To be fair: a longer procedure is not an indication of the outcome. Thorough examinations are normal in such a complex dispute. What the court makes of the statements will be decisive. For more information on Rockstar, you can visit the official Rockstar Games website.
