PS5 Gets AI Upscaling QSSR: Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Lead the Way

Sony is making the standard PS5 smarter: The console is getting AI-powered upscaling, which PlayStation calls QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution). At launch, the technology is already active in two games: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.

What is QSSR on PS5?

QSSR follows the principle of the PSSR upscaler that Sony developed for the PS5 Pro: The game renders internally at a lower resolution, and an AI-powered process reconstructs a sharper image from it. According to reports, QSSR is a lighter variant designed to run on the standard PS5. The standard console lacks the dedicated machine learning hardware that the Pro includes.

Which Games Already Support QSSR?

  • Marvel’s Wolverine: QSSR is available via a patch.
  • Ghost of Yōtei: Here too, the technology arrives via an update.
  • All Other Games: Developers must integrate QSSR themselves; nothing benefits automatically. According to reports, Sony plans to broadly open the technology to studios.

What Does This Mean for PS5 Players?

The good news: You don't have to buy anything. Owners of a standard PS5 will get a more stable, detailed image in both games after the update. The less good news: Don't expect PSSR-level quality from the PS5 Pro, as hardware limitations set boundaries here. And as long as only two games are on board, QSSR remains a promise for the future for now.

Those already playing Wolverine will also find a useful quality-of-life option in our report on the new Wolverine patch against the annoying scent trails.

Scene Gamers' Take:

From our perspective, this is a clever move. The PS5 is now a console of mature age, and AI reconstruction can squeeze out more performance without new hardware – similar to what PC gamers have known for years from DLSS and similar technologies. The crucial question will be whether major studios follow suit. If it remains limited to two Sony titles, QSSR is a nice extra. If more games are added soon, it could alleviate the performance issues of many cross-gen titles.
