Marvel’s Wolverine: New Patch Lets You Turn Off Annoying Scent Trails

Insomniac Games is listening: With Update 1.001.006 for Marvel’s Wolverine, you can now completely disable some of the notorious scent trails and Sense hints. The game has been available exclusively for PS5 since September 15, 2026, and has faced criticism since its launch due to its intrusive assistance features.

What Exactly Can You Disable in the New Update?

Under Settings → Gameplay → Senses, there are now three new toggles that allow you to specifically hide hints:

• Whiskey Bottle Scent Trails, which previously led you persistently to collectibles
• Material Crate Audio Cues, which audibly revealed resource crates
• Nightmare Door Roots, visual root paths to optional areas in nightmare sequences

Additionally, the patch fixes several crashes, a progress bug during tree-sliding, an issue with Wolverine’s claws in Photo Mode, and two other visual errors. All information about the game can be found on the official PlayStation page and directly from Insomniac Games.

Why Do Some Sense Hints Remain Active?

Wolverine’s keen sense of smell cannot be entirely turned off: Story-critical Senses, which assist you with mission objectives or central plotlines, remain active regardless of your settings. Insomniac aims to prevent players from getting completely lost in the main story – after all, Wolverine’s sense of smell is also a central narrative element of his mutant abilities.

For context: This is Insomniac’s second attempt at addressing this issue. Just last week, a first update reduced the intensity of the scent trails after players had complained about the intrusive visual guidance since launch. With the new toggles, the studio is now responding to the criticism much more comprehensively, instead of just making superficial changes. From our perspective, this is a good sign: especially in a game that relies so heavily on immersion, like Marvel’s Wolverine, players should be able to decide for themselves how much guidance they need.
