Sony unveiled a completely new generation of its PS5 audio hardware on September 15, 2026, on the PlayStation Blog: the PlayStation Pulse and PlayStation Pulse Edge Wireless Headsets. Both succeed the previous Pulse Elite series from 2024 and are said to deliver noticeably better sound quality and more comfort, according to Sony.
What Can the New PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge Headsets Do?
Both models feature planar magnetic drivers for the first time in the regular Pulse series, a technology previously found in the more expensive Pulse Elite predecessor. Connection to the PS5 continues via the USB-C PlayStation Link adapter, and the design has become visibly slimmer and more streamlined compared to the previous over-ear headsets. Both headsets also feature a microphone with AI-powered noise cancellation and are available in black and white, according to Sony.
The Pulse Edge, as the top model, goes a step further: According to the PlayStation Blog, Sony has integrated twice as many magnets per planar driver, which should provide more bass and impact. Additionally, it features a retractable, detachable boom microphone with AI noise cancellation, built-in controls for game-chat audio balance directly on the headset, and active noise cancellation (ANC) – a feature completely missing from the 2024 Pulse Elite. The Pulse Edge also includes a carrying case with an audio and microphone jack, along with an adapter for on-the-go use.
When and For How Much Will Pulse and Pulse Edge Be Released?
Sony has not yet commented specifically on prices in the blog post – official pricing details are still pending. However, a release sequence is already emerging: The regular Pulse headset is expected to hit shelves in the current year 2026, while the high-end Pulse Edge model will reportedly follow in early 2027. For comparison: The predecessor, Pulse Elite, cost $149.99 at launch and offered approximately 30 hours of battery life, but without active noise cancellation.
To put it into perspective, it's worth looking at the history: In 2024, Sony first introduced planar magnetic drivers to the PS5 accessory world with Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite, but without ANC. With Pulse and Pulse Edge, this technology is now made available in two price categories, and the Edge model, with active noise cancellation and more bass, precisely fills the gap that users often criticized in the Elite. So, if you currently own a Pulse Elite, you don't necessarily have to upgrade immediately, but those who were already planning to get a new PS5 headset will get more features for their money with the Pulse Edge.
