Planescape: Torment: The 27-Year-Old RPG Classic Is Still Getting New Patches

A CRPG from the last millennium is still receiving actual patches in 2026: Beamdog has released a new 3.2.1 beta for the Enhanced Edition of Planescape: Torment. The original game launched in 1999, with the Enhanced Edition following in 2017 – yet the studio continues to refine minor details to make the game more enjoyable on modern hardware.

What does the new 3.2.1 beta specifically offer?

The current test build is available as a Release Candidate via the beta branch in the game properties and reportedly brings several noticeable improvements:

• A true UI scaling option in the settings, ensuring menus and text remain readable on high-resolution monitors.
• A fix for GOG Galaxy cloud saves, which previously did not function reliably.
• A change in Steam Cloud management: Players using the old, in-game integrated Steam Cloud option should manually disable it once before the final release, as it will be removed from the menu.

The 3.2.1 beta builds upon the 3.2.0 update released in the summer, which introduced several new language versions, including Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Ukrainian, as well as Czech for the mobile version. With dynamically reloadable language files, Beamdog aims to integrate future translations more easily without requiring a complete rebuild each time.

Planescape: Torment was released in December 1999 by Black Isle Studios, which was also responsible for Baldur’s Gate and the early Fallout titles at the time. Under the lead writing of Chris Avellone, the game focused on dialogues and philosophy rather than combat: Players take on the role of the Nameless One, an immortal amnesiac exploring the central question, “What can change the nature of a man?” This text-heavy and narrative depth made it one of the most frequently cited examples of how much literature can be embedded in an RPG – an influence that continues to resonate in narratively driven CRPGs today.

Is it still worth playing today?

For those who missed it in 1999: The Enhanced Edition is available on GOG, among other platforms, and brings modern resolutions, controller support, and quality-of-life features like Quickloot, all without altering the original story. Additionally, there's an active modding scene – most notably the mod PS:T Unfinished Business – Reloaded by Argent77, which builds on Qwinn's original mod and restores omitted but already planned content. Similar to Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition, it demonstrates that old CRPG gems get a second life through Enhanced Edition maintenance, actively supported many years after their initial release.
