Phantom Blade Zero releases on October 29th for PS5 and PC. If you want to download it beforehand, you should start making space now: developer and publisher S-GAME states at least 300 GB of free SSD space is required for the PC preload.
Why Does the Preload Require 300 GB Instead of 145 GB?
The game itself is only about 145 GB on PC. The reason for the doubled amount: During the pre-download via Steam, the data is initially stored encrypted and only decrypted upon release. According to installation notes reported by MP1st, temporary files and the complete game data must fit on the SSD simultaneously for this process. After installation, the space requirement shrinks back to approximately 145 GB. On PlayStation 5, the game is slightly smaller at just under 135 GB.
When Does the Phantom Blade Zero Preload Start?
The pre-download begins in Germany on October 27th at 3:00 AM. The release follows on October 29th at the same time. This gives you two days to download the data.
What Does This Mean for PC Players?
If you have a smaller SSD, you should clean it up before October 27th. The 300 GB is only a temporary peak, the game doesn't require that much permanent space. While this takes some of the drama out of the situation, it doesn't change the fact that many systems will first need to free up space.
At the same time, 145 GB for a somewhat semi-open game world, as described by PC-Games colleague Anni in her review, is unusually large. From our perspective, this is another example of how storage requirements for major releases hardly consider normal SSD sizes anymore. Whether the effort is worthwhile will become clear starting October 29th – according to 4Players, the first reviews are already looking very positive even before release.
