Modern Warfare 4 is now live for everyone, and the extraction mode DMZ is proving very popular. This popularity is precisely why an old wish is resurfacing: many players want to play DMZ without other human opponents, essentially as a pure PvE variant.
How Did the DMZ PvE Debate Start?
The debate was triggered by a small slip-up from Infinity Ward. The studio had apparently accidentally shown a DMZ PvE option, which briefly caused a stir. The developers later clarified: it was purely a developer playlist, and DMZ remains a PvPvE experience. Since millions of players have tried the mode, it's hard to browse the subreddits without encountering related posts.
One user writes that it's extremely frustrating to lose Operators, weapons, and loot to another squad – especially since, according to them, reviving an Operator costs over 60,000 without getting any lost gear back. Others argue that a PvE mode defeats the purpose of an extraction shooter. Proponents counter with Warzone: Resurgence there also offers respawns in Battle Royale.
There's also a petition for the mode, but it's currently stagnant at 331 signatures.
Why is Modern Warfare 4 Lacking a Co-op Mode?
Aside from the campaign, MW4 offers no purely cooperative PvE mode. This is unusual: historically, there's almost always been something in this vein, such as Zombies, Spec Ops, or Endgame (last year in Black Ops 7). From our perspective, this explains some of the pressure. Those accustomed to the co-op experience are now seeking the next best outlet.
This phenomenon isn't new. Arc Raiders recently ran a successful PvE playtest, Escape from Tarkov eventually offered its own PvE variant with separate progression in 2024, and Marathon is also experimenting with PvE content. Therefore, it's hardly surprising that Infinity Ward will eventually have to comment on the matter.
What Does This Mean for DMZ Players?
In the short term: nothing. Officially, DMZ remains PvPvE, and there's no set date for a PvE playlist. Players looking to get accustomed to the mode can find background information on the Launch of Modern Warfare 4 and Traits like Possum, which can at least alleviate some frustration.
