Blizzard kicked off BlizzCon 2026 by unveiling the next major Overwatch season. Season 5 introduces the vampiric support hero Doctrine, significant reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, and the new map Watchpoint: Grímsvötn – all while concluding the year-long story arc “Reign of Talon”.
Those who followed the preview for this year's BlizzCon already knew that Overwatch would be a major highlight. Now, the true scope of the package has been revealed.
Who is Doctrine, the New Overwatch Support Hero?
Doctrine is the newest addition to the Overwatch roster, playing as a support hero with a distinct vampiric flair. His primary weapon, the Eternal Scepter, heals allies and damages enemies at close range – in its “infused” state, it fires a larger, piercing shot. A right-click uses Infuse to empower his next action, while a Shift ability, Shrouded Momentum, allows him to dash sideways with damage reduction. His Ultimate unleashes a swarm of bat drones that reduce enemy maximum health and grant overhealth to his own team. Lore-wise, Doctrine is deeply embedded in Talon's history: an animated short film shows Doomfist, Sombra, and Reaper freeing him from a prison and recruiting him to their cause. Players can try him out now in a limited-time Hero Trial until September 14th; he will become a permanent roster member with Season 5.
What's Changing for Sombra and Roadhog in Season 5?
In addition to the new hero, Blizzard has confirmed two substantial reworks. Sombra is completely transitioning from the Damage to the Support role, fundamentally altering her playstyle. Roadhog will also receive a comprehensive overhaul, though Blizzard has not yet released specific details on the exact changes. The setting for the grand Season finale will be the new Escort map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, an Icelandic volcanic prison where Doomfist frees Doctrine, thus ushering in the final act of the story. When Does Overwatch Season 5 Start and How Does the Reign of Talon Story End?
Season 5 launches on October 6, 2026, simultaneously marking the conclusion of “Reign of Talon” – which Blizzard states is the first year-long, cross-seasonal story arc in Overwatch's history. Analysis: Blizzard dedicating an entire season to a single, continuous narrative is a first for Overwatch – previously, story tidbits were mostly delivered as loosely connected short stories and comics alongside the live service operations. With “Reign of Talon,” the team is tying its seasonal content to a cohesive storyline for an entire year, making its conclusion particularly significant. For current gameplay, the reworks are likely to be the most noticeable changes: while the damage roster loses one of its most flexible flankers with Sombra, a mobile hacking pick moves into the support lineup, capable of significantly disrupting enemy positioning and ultimate timings.
