NHL 27 Arrives: AI Commentary Sparks Launch Controversy

EA Sports NHL 27 officially launched today, September 11, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – and is generating buzz right at launch. The reason for this isn't primarily the new Connected Franchise Mode or the revamped arena atmospheres, but rather the in-game commentary: As it now turns out, a portion of it originates from an Artificial Intelligence.

What's Behind NHL 27's AI Commentary?

Commentator John Buccigross, who provides commentary for NHL 27 alongside Darren Pang, openly confirmed on the “Chirping Zebra’s” podcast that EA is using generative AI to create additional commentary lines. For him, it's not a problem – less work for the same pay, as he put it himself. However, the technology isn't running entirely smoothly: In one documented case, the AI voice described fans “rising from their chairs” after a goal – which is awkward given that ice hockey arenas typically have classic rows of seats, not individual chairs. According to Buccigross, the error was later discovered by his team and manually corrected.

How is the Community Reacting to the AI Commentary?

Reactions from NHL fans range from mixed to critical. Early reviews and social media comments criticize the computer-generated passages for sounding repetitive and for inconsistent pronunciation of names. Several outlets rate the new commentary package as a sonic step backward compared to last year, despite the more sophisticated technology behind it.

With this, NHL 27 joins a series of AI controversies that have occupied the gaming industry in recent weeks. Just recently, the AI-generated shooter Juggernaut from the Steins;Gate creators drew criticism, and at Blizzard, the use of AI tools will even have to be agreed upon with the union in the future, as we described in our report on the Blizzard negotiations. From our perspective, the NHL 27 case shows how thin the line currently is for publishers: Technically, AI commentary might save resources, but as soon as an error is noticed, the trust of an already skeptical community is immediately put to the test.
