Almost 13 years after Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U, the shooter series returns to a Nintendo console. Many expected a stripped-down compromise – but initial impressions are significantly better. Nintendo Life has completely played through the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2.
How Does Modern Warfare 4 Run on Switch 2?
The port comes from Barcelona-based studio Digital Legends. According to the review, the game targets a stable 30 frames per second, and the reviewer didn't notice any significant drops – neither in handheld nor in docked mode. The lighting reportedly looks quite good. Nevertheless, there are weaknesses:
- Textures sometimes pop in late, and detail levels are reduced.
- Hair appears untidy in some areas, and fire effects are occasionally pixelated.
- When transitioning from gameplay to pre-rendered cutscenes, the jump in face quality is noticeable.
- Two upscaling options are available: Filmic SMAA 2TX and Nvidia's DLSS.
Digital Foundry briefly looked at the options: DLSS smooths edges more cleanly and sharpens fine textures like door decals or foliage. A detailed technical analysis is still pending.
What Does the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Offer?
The story comprises 16 missions, which took the reviewer around eight hours. Captain Price hunts Makarov, while the game simultaneously tells the story of South Korean soldiers and a power struggle within the North Korean regime. Mads Mikkelsen plays the main villain. The journey takes you through New York, Paris, and around the world, featuring a beach assault, a car chase, and a diving sequence. Criticism includes repetitive parkour sections and dialogue options without real branching. The only open-ended mission is “Stranded,” where you tackle three objectives in any order. Caution: According to the report, the violence is very drastic.
What Does This Mean for Switch 2 Players?
Those who have never played the series before don't need any prior knowledge – a brief recap summarizes the backstory. Additionally, there's cross-progression: you can continue playing on Switch 2 where you left off on PC. The release is on October 23rd, and pre-order customers can play the campaign now. Multiplayer and DMZ mode have not yet been reviewed – that's where it will be decided whether 30 fps is sufficient. Regarding all release times, we have summarized Early Access, DMZ launch, and release times at a glance for you.
From our perspective, this is a good sign: the Switch 2 doesn't have to compete with PC versions, but rather delivers a playable overall package for on-the-go. Whether this also applies to multiplayer matches will only become clear at launch.
