Marvel's Wolverine: Insomniac Tones Down “Fart Gas” Effect via Hotfix

Insomniac has heard and responded: With hotfix v1.001.005, released on September 19, 2026, Insomniac Games is putting an end – at least partially – to arguably the most unpopular mechanic in Marvel’s Wolverine. We're talking about the bright blue scent trail effect, which the community has dubbed “Fart Gas“ due to its garish, gas-like appearance.

What Exactly Does the Hotfix Change in Marvel’s Wolverine?

In short: less neon, more subtlety. With the official patch, Insomniac has tweaked several aspects:

  • The opacity of the Scent Trails, which guide Logan to the next mission objective, has been significantly reduced.
  • Instead of a prominent neon-green mist trail, there is now only a subtle color shimmer on the ground in front of Wolverine.
  • The Audio-Sense Indicators, meaning the acoustic cues for Logan's mutant senses, have also been made quieter and less intrusive.
  • Additionally, several crash causes that have plagued a small portion of the player base since release have been fixed.

This update does not yet include an option to disable the trail completely. However, Insomniac states that they are continuing to work on improvements to the sense system and are explicitly exploring a toggle option for a future update that would allow the display to be fully deactivated.

Why Was the Scent Trail Mechanic Mocked as “Fart Gas“?

The nickname didn't come out of nowhere: Even before the official release, reviewers criticized the visual implementation of Logan's heightened senses as "too much." Gene Park of the Washington Post was particularly sharp in his critique – and since then, “Fart Gas“ has become a catchy, yet unflattering community term for the mechanic. As we previously reported, Insomniac initially defended the effect as a conscious gameplay element before the studio finally committed to noticeable adjustments. Instead of providing an immersive feeling for Wolverine's superhuman sense of smell, the effect felt to many players like an intrusive guidance system that resembled a quest-marker highway more than an X-Men fantasy.

From our perspective, this step is overdue but correct: Guidance systems that aggressively intrude on the screen are not a new problem – from Ubisoft's Eagle Vision mechanics to trail markers in other open-world titles, similar criticism has arisen when studios prioritize navigation aids over immersion. Insomniac itself is familiar with this tension from its Spider-Man games, where Webbed-Sense indicators also had to balance between assistance and visual overkill. The developer's public commitment now to a possible complete toggle option shows that they are listening to reviews and community feedback instead of waiting it out – something Insomniac had already announced just a few days ago when Community Director James Stevenson promised improvements following the mixed reviews. For players, this concretely means: those who found the trail annoying will immediately notice a significantly calmer screen – though it hasn't completely disappeared yet.

Will a Complete Toggle Option for Sense Indicators Still Come?

Only that Insomniac is exploring the possibility has been officially confirmed. A date for a corresponding update has not yet been set. If the option does arrive, it will likely please players who prefer to experience Logan's abilities themselves rather than being led by the UI.
