A leak is currently causing quite a stir in the DC gaming community: According to a report from IGN, Supergirl and Batwoman are reportedly set to appear as playable characters in a previously unannounced Injustice 3. The origin of the leak is the portal MP1st, which published the information on September 21st. Kotaku also independently reported on the same details – a circumstance that lends additional weight to the matter, even if nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
How Did the Injustice 3 Leak Come to Light?
The origin of all this is quite unspectacular – and precisely for that reason, exciting: According to reports, a direct reference to motion-capture work for a game simply named “Injustice 3” appeared on a stunt performer's resume. The individual reportedly listed performances for two roles there: Supergirl and Batwoman. Such casting or reference leaks are not uncommon in the games industry – stunt and mocap crews ultimately have to document their work somewhere, and sometimes a project name that should have remained under wraps slips through.
Which Characters Are Reportedly Included, According to the Leak?
Supergirl would not be a big surprise. She already played a central role in the story mode of Injustice 2, so her return would make narrative sense. Batwoman, on the other hand, would actually be a real novelty according to the leak: The character has not yet appeared in a main game in the series – apart from a CW-inspired version in the mobile spin-off. Should this be confirmed, it would be her debut in the “proper” Injustice universe.
How Credible is the Source – and What Else is NetherRealm Up To?
NetherRealm Studios, the development team behind the Injustice and Mortal Kombat series, has over the years earned a reputation for delivering genuine fighting games with strong story campaigns. Precisely for this reason, every rumor surrounding a new project from the studio is closely watched. The fact that two independent sources – MP1st and Kotaku – have come to similar conclusions makes the leak at least more credible than the average rumor tweet. Nevertheless, it remains: there has been no official announcement of Injustice 3 to date, and leaks regarding casting documents have often been false or misleading.
From our perspective, it's worth taking this with a healthy dose of caution: Motion-capture work doesn't automatically mean that a character will make it into the final roster – scenes are sometimes recorded and later not used. However, if NetherRealm does indeed have Injustice 3 in the pipeline, Supergirl plus a genuine newcomer like Batwoman would be an exciting mix of fan service and fresh air.
