Kojima Breaks His Silence: What He *Really* Says About Physint's Split from Sony

It's the story that has been speculated about for weeks, and now Hideo Kojima himself has spoken out. In his first interview since Sony's surprising withdrawal from Physint, the director recounts how he learned of the decision, which allegations he refutes, and why he still maintains his relationship with Sony despite everything.

What Happened Between Kojima and Sony on the Physint Project?

For a long time, Physint was considered an exclusive PlayStation project, developed by Kojima Productions in close collaboration with Sony. The publisher's exit came all the more surprisingly. Kojima now reveals that he was informed of the decision via a Zoom call and was completely caught off guard. Nothing could have prepared him for this step, he indicated. Instead of continuing to work with PlayStation, Physint is now changing camps: Xbox will handle publishing going forward.

Why Does Kojima Refute the Allegations Regarding Budget and Schedule?

Recently, rumors circulated online that Physint had gone off the rails internally, becoming too expensive and falling significantly behind schedule. Kojima strongly refutes this. He states in interviews that he neither overran the budget nor missed deadlines. Particularly noteworthy: despite the break with the previous publisher, he explicitly emphasizes that he still loves Sony. No bitter words, no open reckoning, but rather the image of a director who is still in the process of coming to terms with the situation himself.

Kojima Productions itself has also spoken out, asking fans to treat reports about the background of the change with a healthy dose of skepticism. Official details regarding the actual reasons for Sony's exit thus remain scarce, and there has been no official statement from Sony itself so far.

What Does the Switch to Xbox Mean for PlayStation Players?

For fans on PS5 and a possible PS6, this is initially unpleasant news. Should Physint indeed continue as an Xbox-published title, an exclusive release on PlayStation is off the table. This doesn't necessarily mean PlayStation players will be completely left out, as many major Xbox titles are now also appearing on other platforms, but the close ties to Sony's hardware, as known from previous Kojima projects, will likely be a thing of the past for now. So, anyone who was looking forward to a PlayStation-exclusive Metal Gear-esque espionage epic will now have to rethink.

From our perspective, this case is also remarkable because Kojima and Sony have been considered one of the industry's most prestigious creative duos for years. Especially since the split from Konami and the launch of Death Stranding, the partnership seemed set in stone. The fact that this very relationship is now crumbling shows how much publishers are currently parting ways with long-standing star studios when their own cost and risk calculations no longer add up.
