Krafton is upping the ante for its life-sim hit Inzoi: Studio head Hyungjun “Kjun” Kim has announced a new optional mode called Canvastown. In it, up to 50 players will be able to roam simultaneously within a single instance, each as their own Zoi, instead of the usual top-down control over an entire city. Kim explicitly compares the concept to Ready Player One: a shared virtual space where you navigate the world as your own character and interact with other real players.
What exactly is Canvastown?
Canvastown is envisioned as a standalone side mode, not a replacement for the classic Inzoi core gameplay. Instead of the god-like control over multiple Zois and their lives, in this mode, you control a single character from a first-person perspective, moving freely through a shared city and encountering other real players instead of AI-controlled neighbors. Krafton has not yet provided specific details regarding the release date, scope, or whether the mode will be included for free in the existing Early Access package.
Why is Kim emphasizing the focus on core goals right now?
The timing is no coincidence. Inzoi launched into Early Access in March 2025 and immediately caused a stir: On its first day, the game recorded around 72,000 concurrent players, even surpassing the previous peak of market leader The Sims 4. However, the hype quickly cooled down as many players simply felt there wasn't enough content to keep them engaged long-term. At the time, Kim publicly apologized for the “numerous weaknesses” of the launch and subsequently even removed the controversial Denuvo copy protection to gather direct community feedback.
Against this backdrop, the announcement of Canvastown almost seems like a balancing act: Kim simultaneously emphasizes that the studio remains “very focused on our core goals” and does not want to neglect the main simulation, even as a completely new, elaborate multiplayer feature is being developed. From our perspective, this is understandable: an additional social mode can bring fresh air without Krafton losing sight of the actual ongoing development – more depth in single-player. Whether Canvastown achieves this will only become clear once concrete details and a testing period are announced.
