As of today, July 28, 2026, Halo: Campaign Evolved is available worldwide – we have already reported on its historic release on PlayStation. But on PC, of all platforms, the launch excitement is dampened: With over 2,000 user reviews on Steam, the remake only stands at “Mixed” – unusual for a game that receives significantly better critical acclaim on consoles.
Mandatory Login in a Purely Single-Player Game
Ironically, the main point of criticism concerns the game's core concept: Campaign Evolved is a pure solo/co-op campaign experience, completely devoid of competitive multiplayer. Nevertheless, the PC version demands a mandatory login via a Microsoft account, including an online connection, before the game can even be launched. On release day, according to numerous player reports, this led to:
- Long queues before the actual game launch
- Disconnections and crashes mid-campaign
- Noticeable performance drops, including cutscenes running at only 30 frames per second
For a game with no online component in its actual gameplay, the mandatory login feels like an unnecessary obstacle to many players – especially since numerous other single-player titles have long shown that it's perfectly possible without forced logins.

A Peculiar Launch Bug as an Added Bonus
Additionally, a technical blunder caused frustration: For some players, clicking the start button on Steam opened the digital artbook instead of the actual game, which is supposed to be just a bonus item for the Collector’s Edition. Halo Studios reacted swiftly and, according to their own statements, fixed the error within approximately 40 minutes.
A Record No One Should Be Proud Of
Despite the PC turmoil, the overall Metacritic score varies significantly by platform: 86 points on Xbox Series X, 80 on PlayStation 5, but only 77 on PC. This makes Campaign Evolved, based on its PC score, the lowest-rated installment in the main series to date – we had already pointed out the impending series low in our report on the initial review scores. Previously, Halo 3: ODST held the series' negative record with 83 points.
From our perspective, the weak PC score is particularly bitter because it's self-inflicted: The remake itself is praised by most reviewers for its graphics and scope, but the mandatory login and the bug have visibly eroded the trust of precisely those PC players who enthusiastically awaited a classic, story-focused Halo experience.
