Halo: Campaign Evolved – Reviews Are In, and They Mark a Series Low

The reviews for Halo: Campaign Evolved are in – and the reception is mixed to solid, but certainly not a standout. The meticulously modernized remake of the original campaign landed on Metacritic with 80 points for the PS5, 86 for the Xbox Series X, and only 77 for PC. This makes it, according to several analyses, the lowest-rated Halo campaign in the series to date.

On OpenCritic, the picture is a bit more forgiving with a “Strong” rating and an average of around 83 points: The game thereby ranks among the top 11 percent of all titles listed there, with 89 percent of critics recommending it.

What reviewers praise: the noticeably modernized, faithful re-imagining of the original campaign with overhauled graphics and controls. Conversely, the main points of criticism are:

  • There is no competitive multiplayer mode – those looking for PvP will be left empty-handed.
  • The PC version, running on Unreal Engine 5, struggled with performance issues for some testers.
  • The price is considered too high by several critics for “just” a campaign remake without entirely new content.
  • Some technical rough edges in cutscenes and loading times tarnish the otherwise positive first impression.

Ultimately, according to the available reviews, you get a skillfully crafted, lovingly polished campaign experience – but certainly not a masterpiece that reinvents the series. Those who want to relive the original Halo story in a modern guise will still find it worth their while.
