GTA 6: Warhorse Boss Hopes for $80 as New Triple-A Standard

The next pricing uproar surrounding GTA 6 isn't coming from Rockstar itself. Martin Klima, co-founder and COO of Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2), has publicly expressed his wish for the Rockstar title to drive up the price of Triple-A games.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Klima stated that the series personally "doesn't appeal to him at all." Nevertheless, he hopes for its success. His reasoning: the price per game is the last lever the industry has left. VGC and Eurogamer, among others, have reported on this.

What Exactly Does the Warhorse Boss Say About Game Prices?

According to VGC, Klima said a higher selling price "would help a lot, but everyone is terrified of it." He hopes that GTA will "pave the way" and allow other studios to raise their prices. Only Rockstar and Take-Two could or would dare to do that. In his opinion, this is "long overdue" and "necessary for this business to survive."

What Does GTA 6 Cost and How Is the Market Reacting?

According to VGC, GTA 6 is launching next month with a price tag of $80. The more expensive $100 edition is reportedly even Take-Two's best-seller. The industry is simultaneously under pressure: development costs are rising, inflation has devalued the classic $60 to $70 price point, and there have been many layoffs and studio closures.

On the other hand, a survey cited by VGC indicates that 62 percent of particularly engaged players no longer buy new releases at full price, but instead wait for discounts.

Will GTA 6 Really Raise Prices for Everyone?

That's the real question. From our perspective, the success of GTA 6 is not a free pass for every publisher: Rockstar holds a unique position due to years of anticipation and unprecedented attention, which smaller studios simply don't have. An $80 price tag for a medium-sized game could prove significantly harder to sell. How much players accept the price will only become clear after the release.

We recently covered the general sentiment surrounding the game in our report on how GTA 6's chances for Game of the Year at The Game Awards are wavering.
