GTA 6: Game of the Year Chances at The Game Awards Look Shaky

Will GTA 6 even get a fair shot at Game of the Year? Journalist and former games editor Alanah Pearce has expressed doubts in a livestream – and according to IGN, the game might not even be eligible for this year's The Game Awards.

The reason is the timing: Rockstar's open-world title is set to release on November 19, while The Game Awards will take place on December 10 in Los Angeles. According to Pearce's assessment, the timeframe for a strong showing at the awards is too tight.

Why Might GTA 6 Face Problems at The Game Awards?

It's about the procedures of the awards ceremony. Nominations are traditionally made in November by a jury that must have played the games beforehand. Reports suggest much depends on whether Rockstar grants the jury early access and whether the eligibility deadline falls after the release date. If there are no traditional review codes, only a few jurors might be able to get enough playtime. Nothing has been officially confirmed on this yet.

What Does This Mean for the Community?

For fans, this is a bitter prospect: The most anticipated game of the year could leave the biggest award show empty-handed – or only compete in 2027. Games being honored in the following year due to a late release has happened multiple times at The Game Awards.

From our perspective, this issue is less about drama and more about scheduling logistics. Rockstar recently revealed new details in a major Game Informer cover story, which we summarized in our report on the cover story featuring a weather system and wildlife – so the marketing is in full swing. Whether that's enough for a nomination will ultimately be decided by the calendar. More about the show can be found on the official Game Awards website.
