GTA 6: Rockstar Created Around 600,000 Animations for NPCs

When you walk the sidewalks in GTA 6, you'll no longer encounter interchangeable extras. According to Edge's extensive preview, Rockstar has created approximately 600,000 animations for pedestrians and given them their own unique personality traits. PC Gamer summarized the details today.

How Do NPCs Work in GTA 6?

Instead of primarily assembling crowds procedurally, Rockstar has assigned a dedicated team of writers, directors, and producers in Los Angeles. Their mission: to make Leonida's inhabitants feel more individual. Every pedestrian is given characteristics like temperament and a propensity for aggression. This is combined with their current location, what they've already witnessed, and how you've behaved towards them. According to Edge, even the city districts have their own demographic and professional characteristics.

Rob Nelson, Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, describes the underlying questions as follows: Who will become aggressive, how many will pull out a weapon, how many will try to test me?

What Happens When You Stare at an NPC?

Edge describes a scene from the demo: A man with a dog perceives Jason's gaze as a challenge, takes a stance, and unleashes his dog. Nelson runs away, the dog chases, pigeons scatter, and eventually, the animal loses interest. A few meters away, a police patrol arrests a suspect, leaving their vehicles unattended. Nelson opens a trunk, pulls out a shotgun, and continues on his way. The entire scene, according to Edge, lasted only three minutes.

  • Approximately 600,000 animations, all artistically supervised by the studio
  • Personality depends on temperament, aggression, location, past experiences, and your behavior
  • Dedicated team of writers, directors, and producers in Los Angeles
  • Different districts with their own demographic and professional character

Why Is Rockstar Investing So Much Effort in Pedestrians?

The classic GTA pedestrian was a kind of walking prop who panicked as soon as you drew a weapon. Rockstar already showed with Red Dead Redemption 2 that the studio understands minor details as part of the overall experience. GTA 6 apparently continues this path consistently. However, this effort comes at a price: PC Gamer reports that the complexity temporarily kept the studio stretched thin. The working climate at Rockstar is currently a topic of discussion anyway, as our report on the union vote at Rockstar shows.

From our perspective, the crucial question isn't whether the numbers are impressive, but whether you feel the systems in everyday gameplay. A pedestrian reacting to your gaze is a powerful moment. However, the game must sustain this over many hours and for millions of players, even without Rockstar's pre-prepared demo sequence. We'll know more by November 19th at the latest. A PC version has not been scheduled yet.
