A new comparison video is currently sparking discussion within the community: It shows, side-by-side, just how much the driving physics in GTA 6 have changed compared to its predecessor, GTA 5. During an identical 180-degree turn, the vehicle in GTA 6 feels noticeably heavier, the rear breaks out differently, and the tires genuinely seem to be searching for grip on the surface rather than simply sliding.
How Does GTA 6's Driving Physics Differ from GTA 5's?
Rockstar North Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson recently explained the background in a conversation with YouTuber TGG: The driving model for GTA 6 was completely rebuilt from scratch on current hardware. According to Nelson, the team has significantly more control over individual parameters such as the drivetrain, tires, suspension, and steering – all of which are now integrated much more granularly into the physics model than in GTA 5. The result: cars feel distinct, depending on whether you're driving a heavy pickup truck or a light sports car.
Why is Rockstar Taking Cues from GTA 4 for GTA 6?
This is no accident, but a conscious return: GTA 4 was notoriously famous in 2008 for its "floaty," extremely weighty driving behavior – fans at the time were split between "finally realistic" and "unplayably frustrating." GTA 5 then shifted entirely towards accessibility and an arcade feel, which was more mass-market friendly but also took away some of the groundedness and thrill for the community. With GTA 6, Rockstar is explicitly trying to strike a balance, according to Nelson: retaining the weightiness and tactile feel of GTA 4 without sacrificing the accessibility of GTA 5.
For players, this means specifically: Those accustomed to GTA 5's controls will likely need a short adjustment period when the game releases on November 19, 2026. Conversely, those who missed GTA 4 should be pleased – provided Rockstar truly delivers on its promise of accessibility. This can only really be judged in the finished game, but the community's reactions to the comparison video so far have been overwhelmingly positive.
