Shortly after Rockstar Games exclusively launched the new GTA 6 Extended Look on Netflix, thousands of fans found themselves unable to access anything. The streaming service suddenly displayed error messages instead of the highly anticipated video – an outage that, according to multiple news outlets, was directly attributable to the massive influx from the GTA community.
Why Did Netflix Briefly Crash During the GTA 6 Premiere?
According to Eurogamer, the outage tracking portal Downdetector reported a sudden spike of over 3,000 problem reports at the moment of the premiere. Many users were temporarily unable to access Netflix at all, while others saw a frozen screen or a crash message in the middle of the stream. The good news for everyone who didn't miss out: The outage lasted barely a minute, after which the roughly 27-minute Extended Look presentation and the video ran stably again.
Netflix had secured exclusive rights for a kind of preview window: subscribers were able to watch the clip approximately six hours before everyone else, before it also became available on Rockstar's official YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 website.
So, What Does the GTA 6 Extended Look Actually Show?
Beyond the pure story presentation, several news outlets meticulously searched for new activities in Leonida – and discovered quite a few. Among the things seen were:
- Dives and jet ski rides along the coast
- Basketball and mini-golf rounds as leisure activities
- Dirt bike races and apparently also skydiving
- Weight training in the gym that visibly influences the player character
- Nightlife with club visits, dancing, and drinking, sometimes directly integrated into missions
- A livestream system that apparently ties into GTA 6's announced social media mechanics
Rockstar has not yet provided an official total number of activities, but it's already becoming clear: Leonida is set to offer significantly more than just story missions and police chases.
How Does the Netflix Outage Fit into the GTA 6 Hype Wave?
From our perspective, the brief Netflix outage highlights one thing above all: Few other games in recent years have generated such extreme expectations as GTA 6. The first trailer in December 2023 already broke viewership records on YouTube, and even the announcement of today's Netflix premiere had kept the community on tenterhooks for weeks – we had summarized all broadcast times in advance. The fact that the major streaming partner buckled under the rush almost perfectly fits the narrative of a fanbase that has been waiting for this moment for years. Just hours before the premiere, Rockstar had also already confirmed several new gameplay details, which further fueled expectations.
