In September, the Miami-Dade Sheriff made headlines with sharp criticism of GTA 6 advertising. Now, his office is walking back those statements – at least concerning the basketball team. A spokesperson told PC Gamer that the concerns were related to public institutions, not the decisions of private companies or organizations.
What was the Sheriff's original criticism?
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz had attacked the planned use of public infrastructure such as public transport, stations, and Miami International Airport for GTA 6 advertising. His reasoning: Grand Theft Auto is a video game franchise built around criminal activity – including murder, robbery, drug trafficking, car theft, and violence against police officers.
What is the Miami Heat planning for "Night in Vice City"?
The Kaseya Center, home arena of the Miami Heat, already sports a huge "Welcome to Vice City" sign on its roof, visible to planes approaching MIA. In October, the "Night in Vice City" campaign made it concrete: the arena and team will be rebranded with a Vice City look for a one-off event. The PC Gamer article doesn't mention the exact date; we had already reported on the Heat's "Vice City" date.
Additionally, Miami Beach approved a "discreet" campaign in September, implemented by Boucher Brothers with advertising on lounge chairs and umbrellas. According to the article, a city council member reported that a police officer even laughed off the concerns.
What does this mean for GTA 6 and Rockstar?
From our perspective, the case shows how much Rockstar and Take-Two are leveraging Miami's real-world backdrop as a marketing tool. The dispute is less about the game itself and more about where public spaces end and private campaigns begin. For you as a player, this changes nothing about the game, but it does show how massive the marketing buzz will be before the release on November 19.
