Unlike the trio from GTA 5, this time there are only two playable main characters. Why Is Rockstar Only Focusing on Two Main Characters This Time?
Rockstar Games deliberately opted against a larger ensemble of playable characters. Initially, more than two characters were reportedly considered, but ultimately, it came down to just Lucia and Jason. The reasoning: the more main characters a game has, the more inevitably fragmented the playtime for individual characters becomes. With only two protagonists, Rockstar apparently wants to ensure that both characters receive ample room for character development and their own missions, rather than getting lost in a story mishmash.
What Does This Mean for Your Playtime in GTA 6?
For you as a player, this specifically means: when you switch between Lucia and Jason in GTA 6, you can expect both characters to have a significantly larger share of the total playtime than, say, Trevor, Michael, or Franklin individually had in GTA 5. How much the balance ultimately shifts towards one character or the other will likely also depend on how story missions and optional activities are distributed between them – Rockstar has not yet provided exact figures on this. Vice City itself is reportedly almost twice as large as Los Santos from GTA 5, according to initial reports, which makes the question of playtime distribution even more intriguing: with such a massive map, free exploration will likely consume a large portion of your time anyway, regardless of who you're currently controlling.
From our perspective, the question is difficult to answer generally as long as GTA 6 isn't playable yet – experience shows that it's less about personal preference for a character and more about how heavily the story emphasizes each throughout the campaign. In GTA 5, the relationship between the three protagonists only really became clear over the course of the game, and not everyone ended up spending equal time with each character.
