Nearly ten years after its release, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is getting another significant technical boost. Starting today, the free native PS5 upgrade is available for all players who already own the open-world shooter. It brings with it: native 4K, stable 60 frames per second, and finer haptic feedback via the DualSense controller.
The upgrade is purely a technical update, not a remake. You don't need to buy anything extra – anyone who owns the PS4 version automatically gets access to the PS5 version as soon as they start the game on their PS5 and download the corresponding version.
What Changes with the PS5 Upgrade
Beyond just visuals, there's also fresh content for anyone looking to return:
- Native 4K resolution instead of the old upscaled PS4 Pro rendering
- Consistent 60 frames per second instead of the original 30fps
- DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers for weapons and vehicles
- Shorter loading times thanks to SSD optimization
- The new free mission “Last Rites” as an additional story beat
- A Free-Play Period from August 6th to 10th, during which even non-owners can try out the full game without obligation
Free-Play Period: How to Play Wildlands for Free
In parallel with the upgrade, Ubisoft is opening up the Bolivia map to everyone: From August 6th to 10th, you can play Ghost Recon Wildlands completely free, whether solo or in four-player co-op with friends. If you want more after that, you can jump straight into the full version and won't have to start over, provided you've already accumulated progress during the trial period.
Analysis: A Late, But Clever Support Move
Ghost Recon Wildlands originally launched in 2017 as the first open-world installment in the Ghost Recon series and marked the transition from linear missions to a massive, freely explorable game world. That Ubisoft is now giving a native PS5 upgrade to a game that's already nine years old is unusually generous – many publishers simply leave older open-world titles in their last-gen versions. Nevertheless, the move makes sense for Ubisoft: The free-play period acts as a marketing funnel for the series' follow-up spin-off and simultaneously keeps the active player base alive, just before new Ghost Recon projects are on the horizon. From our perspective, the upgrade is especially worthwhile for co-op fans who missed Wildlands back then – especially now that getting started costs nothing.
