Important Note: This is a rumor that has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Disney, Lucasfilm, or EA.
Is Star Wars Battlefront 3 still happening? This week, rumors are gaining momentum. The trigger: Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb read an excerpt from the revived “Quarterman” column in Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM). According to the report, Disney allegedly has “big plans” for the Battlefront series.
Which Studios Are Reportedly Involved in Battlefront 3?
According to EGM, Lucasfilm is allegedly looking for a development partner for Battlefront 3. Two studios are said to be “circling” the project: DICE, the creators of Battlefield and the latest Battlefront installments, as well as Bungie (Halo, Destiny, Marathon).
Then came the next twist: Joe Brammer, head of Wardogs developer Bulkhead, wrote on X that DICE and – “from what I’ve heard” – Respawn are working on Battlefront 3. He didn’t know what that would mean for Battlefield. This, too, is an unconfirmed, second-hand statement.
IGN considers Bungie a big surprise. According to the report, the studio is struggling with the extraction shooter Marathon and only last month announced additional Destiny content. At the same time, DICE would be the obvious choice.
Is Battlefront 3 Already in Production?
Probably not. If Lucasfilm is still looking for partners, the game is likely still in its early stages. IGN suggests it’s conceivable that DICE and Respawn have done pre-production work, meaning the concept and gameplay principles were developed while they seek support.
Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly recently told The Game Business that “huge triple-A games like Battlefront will always remain a crucial part of the strategy.” Additionally, smaller projects in other genres are in the works.
What Does This Mean for Battlefield and the Fans?
Here’s our assessment. Battlefront is a series with a roller-coaster ride: DICE brought it back with a reboot in 2015, but in 2017, Battlefront 2 suffered a catastrophic launch due to the loot box backlash. It took DICE years to turn the tide – today, the installment enjoys a good reputation. Furthermore: a large part of the original team has since moved on to other studios in Sweden and abroad, including Embark (The Finals, Arc Raiders).
Important for all Battlefield players: From our perspective, this rumor is not a sign that Battlefield 6 is going downhill. How resources would be distributed is pure speculation. You can read about how DICE has recently been working on Battlefield 6 in our report on the developers’ reaction to the “Secuty” typo.
Until Disney or EA announce something, it remains just that: a rumor, nothing more. As soon as there’s official news, we’ll let you know.
