The Coalition has done it: The first proper multiplayer trailer for Gears of War: E-Day is here, complete with a full deep dive to boot. Instead of just showing a few seconds of gameplay, Xbox is pulling out all the stops this time: new maps, a fresh co-op mode, and a firm date for the Open Beta.
What's Inside the Multiplayer Deep Dive
At the heart of the reveal is “Horde Siege,” a new 12-player co-op mode that pits three squads of three against waves of Locust, giving a fresh twist to the series' classic Horde concept. In addition, E-Day gets a classic 4v4 “Versus” mode, launching with five maps: Battleship, Outpost, Precinct, Market, and Skyward. Players will engage in familiar game types like Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and Crucible – precisely the mix Gears veterans have been expecting for years.
When You Can Get Your Hands On It
If you don't want to wait until release, you can jump in earlier: The Open Beta phase begins on August 6, with access granted to all who have pre-ordered the game or subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. The full release of Gears of War: E-Day is set for October 6, 2026, with the game launching on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and directly into Game Pass.
Analysis: Why Horde Siege is a Clever Move
From our perspective, The Coalition is showing with Horde Siege that they've learned from past mistakes. While the classic Horde mode has always been a fan favorite since “Gears of War 2,” in recent installments it was increasingly perceived as merely an additional activity alongside the main Versus multiplayer. By presenting Horde Siege now as an equally important, standalone 12-player mode, rather than just delivering it as bonus content, the studio signals that co-op fans are being considered from the outset this time – a point where previous entries in the series certainly had to endure criticism.
The question remains whether five Versus maps will be enough at launch. Compared to earlier Gears titles, which sometimes started with significantly more maps, this number feels a bit slim. It remains to be seen how quickly The Coalition will deliver new content after release.
