If you've ever wanted to step into the boots of a young Marcus Fenix, you no longer have to wait: The open beta for Gears of War: E-Day has been live since August 13th and is playable for free until August 17th for all players on Xbox Series X|S and PC – completely without a pre-order or Game Pass subscription. This was preceded by an exclusive Early Access phase for pre-order customers and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.
What's Included in the Gears of War E-Day Open Beta?
The beta features two modes: New and central is Horde Siege, a 12-player PvE mode where three four-player squads must collectively defend a massive map called Golden Quarter against hordes of Locust – including R.I.G. objectives, supply caches, secondary objectives, and dramatic invasion events. Additionally, there's the classic 4v4 Versus PvP on the two maps Market and Outpost. Players who participate will also collect exclusive beta rewards such as character and weapon skins, which will then carry over into the full game.

Why is E-Day Such a Big Step for the Gears of War Franchise?
E-Day isn't just another spin-off of the familiar campaign; it's a genuine prequel. The game tells the story of the very first day of the war against the Locust, long before the events of the original Gears of War. For the series, this is a bold step back to its roots, especially after the main series had recently expanded more broadly. From our perspective, this is precisely the right time for a prequel reboot: With Horde Siege, The Coalition is simultaneously testing a completely new PvE format that is much grander in scope than the classic Horde mode concept of its predecessors – a risk that could pay off if the community reacts positively in the beta. The full game is set to release on October 6th, 2026.
For those already in a collecting mood after the beta: A limited “Storm King” Xbox controller matching the game will also be available at launch, which we've already reported on.
