Gears of War: E-Day Gets Limited Edition “Storm King” Xbox Controller

Xbox is getting serious about limited edition accessories: To coincide with the launch of Gears of War: E-Day, Microsoft is releasing its own Xbox Wireless Controller featuring a “Storm King” design. As officially confirmed by Xbox Wire, fans can pre-order this special edition model starting now at participating retailers worldwide.

Diving into the Storm King Design

Visually, the controller features a cracked black and red pattern, reminiscent of fractured volcanic rock. At its center is a red gear bearing the series' Crimson Omen logo, while the Xbox, View, Menu, and Share buttons are rendered in a vibrant blood red. This design joins the long list of franchise-specific editions that Xbox has released over recent years for major first-party launches.

Price, Availability, and What This Means for Collectors

The “Storm King” controller is priced at $89.99 USD or £84.99 GBP and is available for pre-order now. Delivery in time for the release of Gears of War: E-Day on October 6, 2026, is considered likely, though Xbox has not yet announced a firm shipping date. For those who prefer a custom design, the official Xbox Design Lab offers an alternative, allowing players to create their own personalized controllers.

Analysis: Accessories as a Pre-Release Hype Generator

For Microsoft, such limited edition controllers primarily serve as a marketing tool just before major launches – they generate additional visibility among retailers and collectors without altering the actual game itself. The timing is noteworthy: The open beta for Gears of War: E-Day starts just one day later, on August 13th, following the early access phase for pre-order customers and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers earlier this month. Xbox is thus deliberately bundling the accessory announcement and beta launch in the same week to maintain high interest in Gears of War leading up to its actual release in October.
