Fortnite: Epic Reveals Pirate Token Drop Rate – 1 in 137,500

After a week of frustration, Epic Games has clarified the situation: The drop rate for the Pirate Token in Fortnite is now officially confirmed. The token is the most coveted item in the Treasure Hunters mini-season, which launched on November 1. It grants 14 days of access to the Pirate Shop, where virtually everything is free.

According to Destructoid, Epic released the figures on November 7 via the Fortnite Service X account. Prior to this, players had been in the dark for weeks, opening chest after chest without knowing if the effort was even worthwhile.

What is the Pirate Token drop rate in Fortnite?

The base chance, according to Destructoid, is 1 in 137,500 per normal chest. IGN mentions 137,000 in its running text but quotes a fan post with the figure 1:137,500 – we are adhering to the latter number. The token is found in chests like any other item in the season. Epic emphasizes that the drop rates have been consistent since the season's start and do not fluctuate during the day. The only exception is during Treasure Hours: During these windows, chances increase for items like the Pirate Token and the Weekly Gold Outfit. For one evening, Epic stated a double chance (2.0x), according to Destructoid. The next scheduled date, as per Destructoid, is Saturday, November 14.

Why 1 in 137,500 caused such a stir

Without official numbers, the community filled the void themselves: Some players, according to IGN, guessed around 1:7,000 – the reality is almost twenty times higher. This was compounded by reports of squads opening over 15,000 chests without significant rewards, and players opening more than 3,000 chests to no avail. Some called for a boycott, while others considered reporting Epic to the US consumer protection agency, the FTC, arguing that the game is primarily played by children and the token creates FOMO.

Our assessment with a simple calculation: Someone opening 3,000 chests has only a little over a 2 percent chance of getting the token at 1:137,500. After 15,000 chests, it's about 10 percent. This means that many players coming up empty-handed is statistically normal. Realistically, the token remains a lottery ticket, not a goal to actively pursue. Those who don't absolutely need it might save themselves the stress.

Reactions to Epic's post were largely positive, according to IGN, with one caveat: “Thanks for the transparency, but it shouldn't have taken a week.” This is precisely the core of the problem. The numbers would have been a strong start had Epic provided them at the season's launch. Whether this will happen in the future remains to be seen. Similar backlash occurred in October during a campaign against the Nikki-from-Obsession skin.
