The wait is over: Square Enix is officially bringing its epic MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV to the Nintendo Switch 2 today, August 4, 2026. This marks the first time the online RPG, running in its current form since 2013, has landed on a Nintendo console – a true milestone for the platform after years on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
The Cost of the Four Editions
New players have a choice of several bundles. Current pre-order prices include:
- Starter Edition ($19.99 USD): Base game plus the first three expansions: A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood
- Complete Edition ($41.99 USD): The full current package, including Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and the latest expansion, Dawntrail
- Complete Collector’s Edition ($97.99 USD): The Complete Edition including additional bonus content
- Dawntrail standalone for existing players ($39.99 USD, Collector’s Edition $59.99 USD)
All new players also receive a free first month, which Square Enix explicitly declares as a test phase for server stability.
What Players Making the Transition and Existing Players Need to Consider
A bitter pill for all who already play Final Fantasy XIV on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox: A separate subscription is required for the Switch 2 version; an existing membership on other platforms does not automatically cover the console version. So, anyone who wants to play on multiple systems simultaneously will pay twice. On the bright side, your save data remains thanks to cross-progression, and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for FFXIV itself. Those who decide to make the switch should also plan for enough storage space: the installation occupies around 117 GB.
Why the Nintendo Launch is a Big Step
Since its celebrated relaunch as A Realm Reborn in 2013, Final Fantasy XIV has conquered almost every major platform – only Nintendo hardware was completely missing until now, partly due to the technical demands of a true MMO. The fact that the game now runs even with all current expansions on a handheld console demonstrates how much performance the Switch 2 has gained compared to its predecessor. For Square Enix, this is another important building block to open FFXIV to new player groups, even more than a decade after its relaunch.
