Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi provided a concrete look at the storage requirements for the remake's finale in an interview with Video Games Chronicle at Tokyo Game Show 2026 – and the figure is likely to make even seasoned RPG fans take notice. The installation is expected to take up around 200 GB on PlayStation 5 and PC, while on Nintendo Switch 2, it will be approximately 130 GB due to more heavily compressed textures. This places Revelation among the biggest storage hogs of the current console generation.
How Much Storage Space Does Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Need?
When asked if the conclusion to the remake trilogy would exceed the scope of its predecessors' two-disc versions, Hamaguchi responded with a clear yes. The title will “likely” be around 200 GB, the director stated, but also emphasized that development is not yet complete and the final number could still change. For the Switch 2 version, he cited a size of around 130 GB due to more compressed assets and reduced texture details. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to release on April 8, 2027, for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, marking the third and final installment of the reimagining of the 1997 classic.
Why Is The Game So Big?
Hamaguchi also commented generally on the criticism regarding such massive installation sizes: “I understand there are many opinions on this topic, but at the end of the day, it's a fact that we have to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.” Accordingly, the team deliberately made no compromises on scope, graphical quality, or world size to fit everything onto available physical media – instead, additional physical editions will apparently rely more on post-installation from the disc in the future. As the final chapter of the trilogy, Revelation also needs to depict the entire concluding act of the story, including open areas, cinematic quality cutscenes, and high-resolution assets for four platforms simultaneously.
What Does This Mean For Players Compared To Rebirth?
For context: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth already clocked in at around 150 GB in 2024 and was physically shipped on two discs, 100 GB and 50 GB – a comprehensive single-player heavyweight like Alan Wake 2, by comparison, only requires about 80 to 85 GB on PS5. At approximately 200 GB, Revelation would surpass that value by roughly another third. Practically, this means: Anyone wanting to prepare for the April 2027 release should clear out storage space on their internal SSD early or plan for a fast expansion, especially on PS5 and PC. On Switch 2, despite the more moderate 130 GB, the need for expansion will likely also be noticeable.
Whether the figure will change before release remains to be seen – Hamaguchi's use of “likely” deliberately leaves room for variation. For the editorial team, however, the trend is clear: the more elaborate AAA open-world RPGs become, the more the question of storage space transforms from a side issue into a tangible purchasing criterion.
