A sci-fi RPG that, after ten years, finally awakens that very specific BioWare feeling? That's exactly what GamePro describes after an extensive play session with Exodus, the upcoming title from Archetype Entertainment. The studio was founded by former BioWare figures who were instrumental in writing classics like Baldur’s Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, and indeed Mass Effect – and exactly this DNA is said to be present in Exodus.
What exactly did GamePro play in the preview session?
The editorial team played a complete mission on PC and, according to their own statements as confessed Mass Effect fans, checked almost the entire wish list: important decisions with tangible consequences, impactful battles with tactical options, and a companion system reminiscent of the best moments from old BioWare RPGs. This precise blend of narrative depth and third-person action was what once made Mass Effect so special – and what has been missing from the genre since the series concluded.
Why is this particularly relevant for RPG fans right now?
Since the end of the original Mass Effect trilogy, many RPG fans have been waiting for a worthy spiritual successor. While Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield pursued similar approaches in some areas, they rarely combined weighty decisions, companion relationships, and story-driven combat as closely as BioWare once did. From our perspective, this is precisely why expectations for Exodus are so high: With Drew Karpyshyn as Lead Writer, who previously co-wrote Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic, there is indeed someone at the helm who knows how to stage such moments. According to current information, Exodus is scheduled to be released on April 7, 2027, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC – but there's still time until then to further refine the systems.
