While official support for Elden Ring Nightreign is noticeably dwindling, the modding scene shows no signs of giving up on the co-op roguelike. Modder Doneda has ported two complete DLC areas from Dark Souls 2 as a standalone, playable map into Nightreign – and even provides a dedicated trailer for it.
What exactly does Doneda's mod do?
At the heart of the project are Frozen Eleum Loyce and the Frigid Outskirts, two areas from Dark Souls 2's Crown of the Ivory King DLC. Instead of recreating the original DLC route one-to-one, Doneda has assembled the icy city and its surrounding expanses to create a compact terrain for Nightreign's match-based expeditions. The map features its own Shifting Earth setting complete with an individual minimap, thus integrating noticeably into the game's existing structure instead of just appearing as a loose foreign object. For anyone familiar with Dark Souls 2, Doneda's name might already ring a bell: The modder has previously demonstrated how to restore areas originally removed from the game, such as a cut sewage district.
For the map to run at all, Mod Engine 3 is required as a base. After installation, Doneda's project can be loaded via an included profile; in the Roundtable Hold, the new map is then activated normally through the Collector's Announcement Board menu as an additional Shifting Earth option. For co-op play, a separate Seamless Co-op module is also needed, which is copied into the mod folder.

Why is Elden Ring Nightreign considered a 'dead game'?
Nightreign launched mid-year with several hundred thousand concurrent players on Steam, but since then, that number has significantly declined. Current analyses show an average player count in the low five-figure range – a massive drop from its launch peak. While FromSoftware has responded, for example, with adjustments for solo runs and a two-player mode added later in the summer, new major content has remained rather the exception ever since. Nightreign is not a classic live-service title and can also be played solo, which is why a dwindling player count doesn't necessarily mean the end. However, for a spin-off that many already skeptically perceived as an experimental offshoot of the main game, the waning official supply reinforces the impression that FromSoftware and Bandai Namco are slowly turning their attention to other projects.
This is precisely where the community steps in: For existing Nightreign players, a mod like Doneda's initially means extra effort, as Mod Engine 3 needs to be set up separately and the map manually activated – a community project, after all, doesn't replace an official patch with achievements or balancing guarantees. However, those who put in the effort will find a tangible reason to give the game another chance with familiar Dark Souls 2 terrain in a new context, especially as official updates become rarer.
Elden Ring Nightreign is being developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco. Doneda's map mod, named "Frozen Eleum Loyce," can be found on NexusMods, where the installation steps are also explained in detail.
