After the group stage, the CS2 competition at the Esports World Cup 2026 in Paris is now getting serious: on August 19th, the knockout stage begins, where 32 of the world's best CS2 teams will compete for a total prize pool of 2 million US dollars – significantly more than the 1.25 million US dollars of the 2025 edition. Four teams have already advanced from the group stage to the playoffs without losing a single map: Team Falcons, FaZe Clan, GamerLegion, and G2 Esports.
What's the Playoff Format at the Esports World Cup?
From the Round of 16 to the semifinals, a knockout system will be played, with each series going for a maximum of three maps (Best of 3). The only exception is the Grand Final on August 23rd: there, up to five maps (Best of 5) will decide the champion. The early playoff rounds will once again be held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, while the tournament will then move to the significantly larger Accor Arena for the Grand Final.

- 3rd Place: 190,000 US dollars
- 4th Place: 110,000 US dollars
- 5th–8th Places: 60,000 US dollars each
- 9th–16th Places: 35,000 US dollars each

This article was finalized before the first matches concluded – so who truly advances will only be decided throughout the evening. Particularly exciting: GamerLegion vs. MOUZ sees two European teams face each other directly. MOUZ, as a formerly German organization (formerly mousesports), is the most obvious point of reference for the DACH community at this tournament.
How Did The MongolZ Win the 2025 Title?
The starting position for the reigning champions is significantly shakier this time compared to last year. In 2025, The MongolZ won the final against Aurora Gaming and secured $500,000 for first place at the time – a result that brought the team much international acclaim. However, it's explicitly stated for 2026: the 2025 title brings no bonus or free pass; the team had to fight its way through the group stage just like everyone else. And it was a close call: in their Upper Bracket group match, The MongolZ lost to NAVI, only securing their playoff spot via a Lower Bracket win against paiN Gaming. Additionally, there's been a roster change after a weak first half of the 2026 season: player mzinho transferred to BC.Game, and cobrazera was benched. Two talents from their own youth program, tikuak (17, who found his way back to the MongolZ Academy after a stop with the Chinggis Warriors) and DarkMeister (18), moved up.
A lot has also happened with Aurora Gaming, the 2025 finalists: alongside established players XANTARES and woxic, two new players joined, Jimpphat (ex-MOUZ) and kyxsan (from Team Falcons), while IGL MAJ3R and Head Coach Fabre have left the team. Whether this complete overhaul will pay off in just this one tournament week remains to be seen.
