Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 3 Exit the COD HQ App

It's a move many Call of Duty fans have long awaited: Call of Duty is untangling its own app structure. As of July 29th, 9 AM PT, Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III are no longer part of the central Call of Duty HQ installation but are standalone, separately downloadable titles on all platforms, including the Microsoft Store.

What Exactly Is Changing

Previously, players had to install the entire COD HQ application just to access Modern Warfare II or III, even if they only wanted to play one of the two titles. With the update, this has changed as follows:

• Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III can now each be downloaded individually from the platform library and launched directly, without having to go through the COD HQ launcher.
• As of August 7th, Activision will automatically remove all Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III content that was previously duplicated within the main COD HQ installation, to free up storage space on systems.
• According to Activision, save games, progress, and unlocks remain unaffected by the change; only the technical installation structure is impacted.
• Players who play all three titles simultaneously will now have to manage more individual downloads, but in return, they will save unnecessary duplicate data.

Why This Is More Than Just Technical Cosmetics

Since its introduction, the COD HQ app has been regularly criticized for various reasons, including its size, long loading times, and cluttered menu navigation, due to multiple complete games being crammed into a single instance. For those who, for example, only play Modern Warfare III for its multiplayer but have never touched Modern Warfare II, it still meant having to carry around its entire installation size. The current disentanglement is a direct concession to this criticism and is likely to significantly relieve users, especially on consoles with limited storage space. If you've always managed your storage space tightly, you should check your library after August 7th to see how much space has actually been freed up.
