Fans of turn-based tactics can rejoice: Brigandine Abyss, the latest installment in the venerable strategy RPG series, has been released. The first reviews are in – painting a picture of a game that marks a significant step forward for the series, without truly becoming a groundbreaking hit.
When and on Which Platforms Is Brigandine Abyss Released?
On PC, Brigandine Abyss has been available since August 26, 2026, via Steam. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 will follow on August 27. The title was developed by Japanese studio Adglobe and published by NIS America in conjunction with Happinet.
What Do the First Reviews Say About Brigandine Abyss?
The reviews published so far are mixed. Hardcore Gamer awards 3.5 out of 5 points, while DualShockers scores it 7.5 out of 10. Reviewers agree on one point: the story is better told than ever before in the series, and the new battle mechanics with elevation differences and tactical starting positions provide noticeably more depth than in its predecessors. On the critical side, the enemy AI stands out as being too easily outsmarted, along with a lack of variety that hinders long-term motivation. Technically, Brigandine Abyss also doesn't break any new ground, according to reviews: the visuals are considered unimpressive and not particularly well-optimized.
How Does Abyss Fit Into the Brigandine Series?
The Brigandine series has remained a niche product since its PS1 original but has regained a loyal fanbase with the comeback title “Legend of Runersia” a few years ago. Abyss builds upon this fresh start and visibly expands the combat system, while remaining true to the series' leisurely, very text-heavy pace – those expecting fast, action-packed tactical fare are still in the wrong place here. From our perspective, Abyss is particularly worthwhile for series fans and genre nerds who can overlook rough technical aspects and an underwhelming AI. Anyone who truly wants to be challenged tactically should temper their expectations somewhat given the simple enemy AI.
