Fans of classic shoot 'em ups can rejoice: Super Hydorah is currently a whopping 90% off on Steam. Instead of its regular price of €19.99, the non-linear retro shooter is currently available for just €1.99 – a price that is hard to beat for this lovingly crafted homage to genre classics like Gradius and R-Type. The game was developed by the Spanish studio Locomalito, known for years for its pixel-perfect retro homages, and was originally released for Steam and Xbox One.
Is Super Hydorah Worth It at This Price?
Super Hydorah's regular price and deal price are far apart: The regular €19.99 stands against the current €1.99 sale price, which translates to a saving of 90% or exactly €18.00. For less than the price of a coffee, you get a complete, challenging shoot 'em up experience – a price-performance ratio that is rarely so clear-cut. If you've been contemplating getting into the genre, you'll hardly find a cheaper entry point than this.
Who is Super Hydorah For?
Super Hydorah is clearly aimed at fans of the classic horizontal shoot 'em up genre, in the style of 80s and 90s Konami shooters. With a Metacritic score of 82 and broad approval from Steam users, the title is considered one of the best indie representatives of its genre. Reviewers particularly praise its non-linear mission structure, which allows tackling levels in different orders, as well as its powerful chiptune soundtrack and high difficulty, which challenges experienced genre fans but can also drive newcomers to despair. Numerous game modes, weapon upgrades, and a high level of detail in the pixel graphics complete the overall package. If you're looking for bullet-hell action with retro charm, you'll clearly get more here than the price suggests.
