Fly like in Top Gun: EA and DICE have officially announced the next big community update for Battlefield 6, and Battlefield fans have plenty to look forward to. Starting August 18, Phase 2 of the ongoing Season 4 kicks off under the title “Top Gun Incoming” – featuring a genuine crossover with the iconic action film, new flight modes, and the return of one of the series' most beloved maps: Wake Island.
What's in the Top Gun Update
At the heart of the update is the revamped version of Wake Island, which this time is significantly more focused on naval and aerial combat. Aircraft carriers now lie off both coasts of the island, serving as mobile headquarters. Additionally, two new, air-focused game modes are coming:
- Carrier Strike: Teams directly battle for control of aircraft carriers and their runways.
- Fighter Sweep: Pure aerial combat, focused solely on jets and air superiority.
- Two New Top Gun Jets: The F-18 Super Hornet and the classic F-14 Tomcat join the Battlefield 6 arsenal.
- Three Top Gun Characters: Rooster, Bob, and Warlock appear as playable Operators – including original voice actors from the films.
- New POI “Fort Lyndon”: An additional warship area will become part of the REDSEC Battle Royale mode.
According to EA, the new content will remain active until the start of Phase 3 (“Tidal Strike”) on September 15, running parallel to the already available Season 4 content, including the map Tsuru Reef, which was recently refined via a patch.
Why Wake Island Means So Much to the Community
Wake Island is no ordinary map: It was already featured in the original Battlefield 1942 back in 2002 and has since been considered an unofficial series mascot, returning in some form in almost every major installment. Its return was already teased a few days ago in our report on the big Battlefield 6 Discord Q&A, where the developers first vaguely spoke of the Top Gun crossover – now the date and details are finally on the table. For the community, this is an important signal: After rough weeks with server problems and criticism of developer priorities, DICE is showing with a genuine fan favorite that they are taking player wishes seriously. However, anyone who has suffered from frequent connection problems so far should still keep an eye on the patch scope for the update, as large content drops in the past have sometimes brought new server load peaks with them.
