Battlefield Studios – meaning DICE, Motive, and Ripple Effect together – hosted a live Q&A on the official Discord server on July 29, 2026. There was no separate blog post for it, but plenty of concrete answers regarding Season 4 and an initial look at Season 5. Community creator Swaguley summarized the entire Q&A in a recap video – important: this is a community video, not an official EA press release. Nevertheless, we've pulled out the key points for you, so you don't have to scroll through the whole Q&A yourself.
What's Coming with Phase 2 on August 18th
Phase 2 of Season 4 kicks off on August 18, 2026, and according to Phil (Motive) and Ryan (Ripple Effect), it's bringing several big new features. First and foremost: Custom Lobbies, a consistent evolution of Portal. As a host, you can manually assign players to teams and adjust match settings live during the game – including a spectator mode. At launch, Battle Royale Quads and Conquest will be supported, with more modes to follow.
Also arriving is the big Top Gun crossover with the new Carrier Strike mode, where you'll coordinate attacks on an enemy aircraft carrier by sea, land, and air. The Gauntlet mode also features the new mission “Fighter Sweep”. And with the FA-8IF “Super Spectre,” according to Brian (Ripple Effect), you'll get a completely new, two-seater jet with a fully customizable loadout. Additional jets and loadout options are planned, but there's no timeline for them yet.
Proximity Chat, one of the most requested features of all, will initially launch with Phase 3 of Season 4, according to Matthew (Ripple Effect) – and only for Battle Royale and REDSEC at first. An expansion to regular multiplayer is planned afterwards, but depends on how the feature performs in REDSEC's live operation.
Season 5 Outlook: Platoons, New Maps, and Server Browser
Season 4 isn't even in Phase 2 yet, but Roman (Motive) has already given a glimpse of Season 5, which Ryan says is slated to run until the end of 2026. On the list are a true server browser, the long-awaited Platoon feature for clans and guilds, and a rework of the Blackwell Fields and New Sobek City maps. Tests for these are expected to begin “shortly” in Battlefield Labs. Additionally, three entirely new maps are coming, along with a consolidation of matchmaking playlists, which Battlefield Studios aims to use to combat bot-heavy lobbies.
Regarding the outlook for 2027, Ryan confirmed that Battlefield 6 and REDSEC will continue beyond Season 5. A possible roadmap announcement for 2027 is expected “towards the end of the year.”
Key Takeaways from the Discord Q&A
Regarding gameplay topics, the news was rather mixed. According to Brian, the sniper “sweet spot” will remain as it is for now: the balance adjustments from Season 3 did not bring the desired effect, according to the developers themselves. Further iterations are planned for Battlefield Labs, but without a specific date. The statement regarding the suppression mechanic, the screen blur effect from being shot at in older Battlefield titles, remains similarly vague: a comeback is currently being evaluated and is not ruled out, but there is no timeline.
Things get more concrete with Netcode and Time-to-Kill/Time-to-Death: DICE developer Nico confirmed that work is actively continuing on these, also without a firm date. More tangible are the vehicle fixes for Season 4: The RCB90 attack boat, which currently flips too easily, is set to become more stable, and ground vehicles are to become more resistant to the Scout Helicopter.
According to Matthew, there will be no dedicated new loadout or PvP map for REDSEC. Instead, the existing Fort Linden map will be expanded with new Points of Interest, including a new Carrier POI in Phase 2 of Season 4. A Levolution comeback in the style of Battlefield 4 is also not planned, according to Roman – instead, the focus is on targeted, large-scale set-piece destruction events that do not alter the core identity of the maps. Likewise, a Commander Mode comeback or dedicated night maps are not on the agenda; here, the developers refer to Battlefield Portal as an alternative option. A “Rent-a-Server” program for third-party providers is also not in sight; the developers state that the focus here is entirely on their own server browser in Season 5.
