Battlefield 6 Unveils Major Gameplay and Portal Updates Coming August 18th

August 18th doesn't just mark the launch of the major “Top Gun” update in Battlefield 6 – Battlefield Studios is also adding a whole host of gameplay, matchmaking, and Portal improvements for the start of Season 4 Phase 2. Some of these will be ready on day one, while other features will be tweaked throughout the current phase. Here's an overview.

  • ADS Spread Crosshair: An optional indicator shows you live how much your weapon spread expands during sustained fire and movement. By default, it's only active in the firing range, but it can be enabled in multiplayer, completely deactivated, and freely customized in color and opacity.
  • Simplified Jet Controls: A new, beginner-friendly scheme aims to make it easier for new pilots to get started. Experienced pilots can try it as an alternative before the upcoming “Top Gun” aerial battles.
  • TTK/TTD Still Under Review: Weapon balance is continuously analyzed, outliers are identified, and potential buffs for underperforming weapons are being examined – nothing is final yet. According to Battlefield Studios, the average Time-to-Kill has noticeably increased since the gunplay changes in Season 3.
  • Matchmaking Playlist Rotation: Rush, Squad Deathmatch, and King of the Hill are being removed from the standard playlists to stabilize queues, improve match quality, and reduce wait times. However, these modes will remain playable via Portal and custom searches.
  • More Editor Power for Creators: Selected Portal creators will gradually receive experimental tools, including baked lighting, heightmap editing, and terrain painting with grass, dirt, and rock.
  • New Maps for Custom Experiences: Tsuru Reef now supports custom Portal experiences, while Wake Island will initially only support verified experiences – full custom support is planned for later in the season.
  • Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode: Via Battlefield Labs, you can host your own matches in live play, assign teams, and adjust selected settings. Conquest and REDSEC Battle Royale in four-player mode will be available at launch, with more game modes to follow.

Custom Lobbies, in particular, should be a major step for the community scene: those who previously had to rely on workarounds for private matches or small tournaments now get official tools – including Spectator Mode with four spectator slots for first-person, third-person, and free-cam perspectives. All information and the complete roadmap for Season 4 can be found on the official Battlefield 6 page.
