Battlefield 6 is getting a breath of fresh air: Tidal Strike, the third and final phase of Season 4, launches on September 15th – and it's packed with content. The highlight: Proximity Chat makes its debut in the game, initially as a test in Battlefield Labs.
EA announced the update on the official Battlefield 6 website, delivering a whole package of innovations that goes beyond just a feature announcement.
What Exactly Is the New Proximity Chat in Battlefield 6?
Proximity Chat means that players in your immediate vicinity will automatically hear you, even if they're not in your squad. This allows for spontaneous radio calls, negotiations, or simply chaotic communication in the heat of battle. EA is initially launching the feature exclusively in the Battle Royale mode via Battlefield Labs – serving as a test run with a portion of the community before it's rolled out more broadly (if successful). Those who wish to participate must sign up for the Labs tests; a full rollout across all modes is not currently confirmed.
In addition to Proximity Chat, EA is also tweaking the gunplay: aiming clarity has been improved, and vehicle handling has been overhauled to make tanks, jeeps, and similar vehicles control more smoothly. The popular Carrier Strike and Fighter Sweep modes will also remain in the game for the rest of Season 4.
When Does the Anniversary Event Start in Battlefield 6?
If you miss Tidal Strike, you'll get another chance right away: a two-week Anniversary Event with its own challenges and rewards will follow at the end of September. Additionally, there's the REDSEC Phantom Program, another announcement building block surrounding the free-to-play Battle Royale spin-off REDSEC, though EA has not yet revealed specific details about its content.
Why Is This Update a Signal for Battlefield Fans?
Proximity Chat has long been standard in Battle Royale titles – games like Apex Legends and PUBG have relied on it for years because it makes matches more vibrant and unpredictable. The fact that Battlefield 6 is only now adding this feature, and initially only as a test, indicates that EA is proceeding cautiously with REDSEC and apparently wants to see how the community receives the feature before fully integrating it. For the main series itself, the focus remains clearly on classic squad and troop functions – Tidal Strike is primarily a Battle Royale update, not a restructuring of the core game.
