Coinciding with the launch of the major Top Gun Update 1.4.2.0, Battlefield 6 is opening its doors to everyone starting today: From August 18th to 25th, 2026, you can dive in for a full week for free on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, no purchase necessary. Now, the main questions are how to get free access and what the catch is.
How Do You Get Access to the Battlefield 6 Trial Week?
It's not as simple as a click in the store: Instead of directly unlocking Battlefield 6 for free, you'll need to download Battlefield REDSEC, the game's free-to-play Battle Royale spin-off. Downloading REDSEC automatically activates the trial phase for the main game, but it can take up to 60 GB of storage space depending on your platform. If you already have REDSEC installed, you just need an update; everyone else should plan some time for the download before the weekend officially kicks off.
What Content Is Included in the Free Week?
EA isn't giving newcomers a stripped-down demo; instead, they're offering a substantial package from the current patch. Specifically included:
- Five Multiplayer Modes: Conquest, Breakthrough, Escalation, Casual Breakthrough, and the new Top Gun mode Carrier Strike
- Four Maps: the returned Wake Island, the expanded Tsuru Reef, Cairo Bazaar, and Hagental Base
- The complete Top Gun event content, including the new two-seater jets F/A-81F Super Spectre and F-74A Seacat
Important for anyone who decides to buy afterwards: All progress, unlocked weapons, customizations, and ranks from the trial week will not be deleted; they will be retained if you decide to purchase the game later.
Why Isn't the Free Week Without a Catch?
The link to REDSEC is no coincidence. This is already the third free trial phase since Battlefield 6's release in October 2025, and just like with previous promotions, EA is deliberately using this workaround to boost download numbers for its standalone Battle Royale spin-off. From our perspective, it's a clever but transparent strategy: anyone checking out Battlefield 6 essentially gets REDSEC installed on their system as a bonus – and those extra installation figures ultimately benefit the younger spin-off. For you as a player, this doesn't change the actual content of the trial week, but it's still worth knowing why access is structured this way and not otherwise.
When Does the Top Gun Update Go Live in Germany?
The download will be available starting at 10:00 AM German time, while the new content (such as Wake Island and the "Carrier Strike" mode) will officially unlock at 2:00 PM
