Those who still have physical Xbox games on their shelf will soon get a handy bonus: With the new feature Your Discs. Now Also Digital., any supported disc can easily be turned into a digital entry in your library – without the disc losing its original functionality.
How exactly does the Disc-to-Digital feature work on Xbox?
The process is simple: You insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into the console and start the game. This automatically unlocks a digital entitlement for the title on your account. The physical disc will continue to work exactly as before – but you'll also immediately gain access to digital benefits, including Xbox Play Anywhere and, if available for the title, Xbox Cloud Gaming. This allows you to play the game on other devices without the disc.
When does the beta start, and who can test it?
The feature will initially be tested via the Xbox Insider Program: Starting August 31st, Insiders can try out the Disc-to-Digital feature. According to Microsoft, thousands of titles are already supported at launch, with more to follow gradually – not every game will be available from day one.
Why is this feature relevant for collectors and avid gamers?
Until now, the choice between physical and digital versions was often an either-or decision: Those who opted for discs had to keep the disc handy for every console change or system failure, while digital buyers benefited from cloud gaming and cross-device play. The new feature at least partially removes this compromise. For avid gamers with a growing disc collection, this is a tangible added value – especially those who have collected games across multiple console generations can conveniently digitize their library without having to sell or discard the discs.
